ITC TTURC research shows that large, comprehensive warnings on cigarette packages are more likely to be noticed and rated as effective by smokers. Changes in health warnings are also associated with increased effectiveness. Health warnings on U.S. packages, which were last updated in 1984, were associated with the least effectiveness. Findings were published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine this March (Am J Prev Med 2007;32(3):202-209).

In the meantime, regulators should remove quantitative emission values from cigarette packages and more work should be done on alternative machine smoking methods.
